Thyroid Panel

The thyroid, located at the base of your throat makes hormones that controls the way your body uses energy. All the hormones that come from the Thyroid affect your weight, heart, body temperature, muscle strength, and even your mood. Also in children the thyroid hormones affect growth, too. Below are some of the most common test physicians use to test if your thyroid is working properly.

TSH

Thyroid stimulating hormone is used for differential diagnosis of primary, secondary, or tertiary hypothyroidism. This test can also be useful for screening hyperthyroidism. This test will help your doctor determine dosage in hypothyroid patients that are on suppressive thyroxine therapy for thyroid neoplasia. You do not have to be fasting for the test

t4, Total

This test is used to check how well your thyroid is working. Diseases and conditions that affect your thyroid are hypothyroidiam, hyperthyroidism, and disorders of the pituitary gland. In your body you have free and bound t4. This specific test for the bounding t4. You do not have to be fasting for this test.

t4, Free

This test the total amount of t4 you have unbound in your body that enters the tissue where needed. This test is used more often due to its able to provide a more accurate report. You do not have to be fasting for the test

t3, Free

This is the active portion that enters the tissues where needed. Along with the t4, total and the t4, free this test is helpful in diagnosing thyroid problems. You do not have to be fasting for the test

TPO

Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) – Your thyroid glad produces this enzyme. Iodine is used by the thyroid in conjunction with TPO to make a hormone called triiodothyronine (T3) and your throxine (T4). Both of these help control growth and metabolism. This test checks for antibodies made against the TPO. You do not have to be fasting for the test
